A Great Scouter, Jon Pederson, Will Be Missed

Overflow Crowd Pays Their Respects in Spicer, MN

Jon Pederson, a Northern Star Scouting larger-than-life mentor, and leader, passed away unexpectedly August 29. He will be terribly missed by many around our council. Jon worked side-by-side with so many of us to make things happen for children, and where he went, things got done.

Jon was the President of Ruffridge-Johnson Equipment Company. He grew up in Kandiyohi County near Willmar MN. He served a Vietnam tour in the Marines and returned to graduate from Concordia College Moorhead, focusing on German and International Studies.

He traveled around the world working odd jobs for a few years and then met his wife Sophie in Paris. A few years later he was injured in a construction accident so he took a sales job with Ruffridge-Johnson. He bought the company more than 30 years ago.

Jon was very active in the Scouting program from the time he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and continued his service as an adult having held dozens of leadership roles locally, regionally and nationally. Jon was a director on the Northern Star Council board at the time of his death and played a significant role in several camp and capital projects as both a donor and advocate for youth. He served as Council Commissioner, and held several VP roles, including election by consensus as the Vice President for Fun.

Always willing to lead a song or share his tales of local, national and international excursions with groups large and small, John earned several of Scouting’s highest volunteer awards, including the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope.

In addition to Scouting, Jon was passionate about Norway House and Concordia Language Villages. He served as the board chair and capital campaign chair for Norway House and championed the idea of an American-Norwegian center in south Minneapolis.

As you can see, Jon and Sophie have been active in Scouting at practically every level. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family.
